Umetarō made more than one hundred woodblock prints of flowers and (or) birds during the last half of the twentieth century. To show the essence of each picture’s subjects Umetarō eliminated what he considered to be unnecessary detail. The resulting simplicity of shape, color and composition may cause his artwork to be thought of as amateurish by viewers who are unsympathetic with his philosophy. Thirty-two examples of Umetarō’s art are included this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Picture 32 is one of a large number of prints pairing a rock ptarmigan bird with a human mountain climber. Climbing mountains was Umetarō’s favorite hobby.
